In order to help our state grow and develop, it is vitally important to work to ensure the welfare of Mississippi's most vulnerable citizens: its children. The Public Policy Center works to ensure that quality child care is affordable and available to all parents who need it. We are currently working on an assessment of the child care system in the three counties surrounding Jackson with a goal of suggesting needed improvements. We have proposed a program to recruit AmeriCorps members to work in child care centers to supplement child care staff in teaching pre-literacy skills to children below the age of five. This will allow children to receive more individual attention in preparing for school, and it will allow child care centers to devote more time to working toward improvements under Mississippi's 5-star quality rating system.
